Barry Harbour, South Glamorgan

Part of my family are from Wales, and I have been visiting this beautiful country for more than 30 years, although the trips are longer now, since I live in New England. It’s not just a case of going ‘across the bridge’ as the locals say (although there are now two main bridges linking England and Wales across the River Severn, rather than one). Here is a photograph of part of the now quiet harbour at Barry, South Glamorgan. Once this was the busiest port in the world, with massive quantities of coal from the South Wales coalfield being shipped from here. Now, all is relatively calm, as even the raucous local holiday camp has closed down, and the headland site redeveloped.
