Located in a loop of the River Avon, Warwick Castle is one of the most significant of English castles. The original structure was commissioned by William the Conqueror, one of the fast-built series of ‘motte and bailey’ castles which he scattered across the landscape to subdue his newly-won land. The current structure was expanded by the Earls of Warwick (big players on the political stage), and is an excellent example of a shell keep castle……mind you, I think the merlons on the curtain wall are a bit on the big side, don’t you? (The pieces of wall between the embrasures). All in all, a great day out, despite it being rather ‘touristified’ by the present owners (hence the ‘Tiltyard BBQ’!)
